LINCOLN AND THE ABOLITIONISTS History records Abraham Lincoln as the Great Emancipator, yet ardent abolitionists of his day such as William Lloyd Garrison viewed him with deep suspicion. That the 16th president eventually achieved the abolitionists most cherished dream, says biographer Allen Guelzo, happened through a curious combination of political maneuvering, personal conviction, and commitment to constitutional principle. One of the ironies of the Civil War era and the end of slavery in the United States has always been that the man who played the role of the Great Emancipator was so hugely mistrusted and so energetically vilified by the party of abolition. Abraham Lincoln, whatever his larger reputation as the liberator of two†¦show more content†¦I went to prominent Republicans, and among others, to Abraham Lincoln and Lyman Trumbull, and neither of them dared to sign that petition, to give me the right to testify in a court of justice!... If we sent our children to school, Abraham Lincoln would kick them out, in the name of Republicanism and anti-slavery! Lincolns election did not mute abolitionist criticism. His unwillingness to use the outbreak of the Civil War in the spring of 1861 as a pretext for immediate abolition convinced William Lloyd Garrison that Lincoln was unwittingly helping to prolong the war, and to render the result more and more doubtful! If he is 6 feet 4 inches high, he is only a dwarf in mind! Garrison had never really believed that Lincolns Republicans had an issue with the South, and Lincoln himself did nothing once elected to convince him otherwise. Frederick Douglass, who had parted fellowship with Garrison over the issue of noninvolvement in politics, hoped for better from Lincoln, but only seemed to get more disappointments. Lincolns presidential inaugural, with its promise not to interfere with southern slavery if the southern states attempted no violent withdrawal from the Union, left Douglass with no very hopeful impression of Lincoln. Personal Narrative Perfectionism - 1360 Words

It’s been three hours while I sit here and stare at the blinking bar, symbolizing the fact that I have nothing. My page is blank, but I promise you, my thoughts are not. Thousands of ways to start this essay have run through my mind, but none of them are sufficient. Which, I suppose, is where I will begin. Perfectionism, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is, â€Å"a disposition to regard anything short of perfection as unacceptable† (â€Å"Perfectionism†). It is a trait that numerous people might regard as desirable or something to be proud of; a word used to describe oneself on a resume to impress employers. However, I see it much differently. Perfectionism is a fight for something unobtainable, a cyclical trap in which disappointment reigns, and†¦show more content†¦I wish I could place the blame on having unfavorable English teachers like I’ve frequently heard others have the misfortune of facing, although this was never the case. There is no one person or situation that I can claim is responsible for my constant, creeping feelings of inadequacy and I have no knowledge of why I started placing such extreme amounts of pressure on myself. All I know is that it soon seeped into other areas of my life. It was no longer just English in which I strived for perfection, but every subject, every task- inside and outside of school. Almost like everything in my life would be graded and the only grade I would accept is that A, always an A. This obsession, ironically, more often leads to my failure. Soon, I discovered a method to avoid the potential of feeling insubstantial, if only for a few more hours or days. Thus, allow me to introduce you to an old friend, procrastination. My way of thinking soon became, â€Å"If I’m not going to get an A, then why even put the effort in?† and consequently, innumerable assignments were put off until five in the morning where it would be due in two hours or it would never reach my teacher’s hands at all.
